Moldova Noua is a city in Caras-Severin County, situated in the Danube Gorge, in the depression with the same name, at 250-300m altitude, in the south-east of Locvei Mountains, on the border with Serbia and at the same time port on the Danube. It has a population of 14.000 inhabitants.
The locality was mentioned for the first time in 1717 with the name Posneazi, then recorded as Pesnack (in 1723) and in 1761 as Bosniak. Before 1775, there were two places (Bosniak and Baron) who joined after that as the Moldova Noua town. It was declared town in 1968 and has three localities: Macesti, Moldova Veche and Moldovita. Here, there was the Dacian fortress Mudava, where the Romans built a fort, and over it a town was raised in 1427-1428 which was then destroyed by the Turks in the seventeenth century.
The town is bordered to the west of the village Pojejena, to the east Coronini village, to the north Girne and Carbunari villages and to the south by the Danube River - the natural border with Serbia. Traces discovered in the village (Moldova Veche) has proved the human presence in this area since the Neolithic period and Bronze Age. There were discovered pieces of polished black pottery with geometric decorations.Later, during the Roman period apparently there was a settlement in Moldova Noua in the village area, where they have discovered bricks with the stamp Cohors III Delmatarum and a monetary treasure.Important cultural and historical attractions are: Pescari - the ruins of a medieval fortress, Sfanta Elena rural village and Valea Mare Forest Reserve.
In Pescari village, there are the ruins of a medieval fortress, which is believed to be originally Glad prince residence then rebuilt in stages: the first site in the XIIIth century, the surrounding wall in the XIVth century and the center in the XVth century; near the cave Gura Chindiei, they found cave drawings and a Cyrillic inscription, dating from the X-XI century.
In Sfanta Elena village is a karstic plateau with many attractive forms: clints (polished rocks, stripped of grooves with different depths, separated by sharp increases), sinkholes, lakes, small sinkholes.
Valea Mare Nature Reserve, (325 ha), is represented by forest species growing in Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean area (manna, mountain maple, lilac); there are several clearings whith ivy grows naturally, Arabic alfalfa, etc.
Other tourism attractions in the area are: Valea Mare Mixed Reserve, a chain of waterfalls on the Moldovita River (with heights ranging from 10 to 30 m), Portile de Fier National Park, archaeological site, mining settlements (sec. II-III), fishing, hunting, nautical sports.
Moldova Noua also has the most modern passenger terminal on the Danube.
