Corabia is a town-port in the Olt county, located on the left bank of the Danube, at 80 km south of Slatina.

Corabia is still one of the central spots of the Olt county, with the villages of Tudor Vladimirescu and Vârtopu depending on it as an administrative centre.

Its name reflects the fact that the original settlement was built from the remains of a wrecked Genoan ship (corabia is the Romanian language term for "sailing ship”, specifically used for "galley"). It became a great port in the 1880s.

Its neighbors are – to the east the Gîrcov village, to the south - the Danube, to the west the Orlea locality and to the north the Vişina locality. On the right bank of the Danube lies the Pleven province from Bulgaria.
The locality is crossed by DN 54, Caracal - Corabia and DN 54 Corabia-Turnu Magurele, with road links to all the localities in the Danube valley, to Bechet, the Dolj county and to the north has road connections with all the northern towns of the Olt valley to Caracal and also Teleorman county through the Turnu Magurele town.
The Corabia town has connections on the Danube river by the Corabia port, both with   the Romanian villages upstream and downstream and with riparian states and localities on the river course.
Corabia has two railway gates that provide the goods and passenger traffic through the Caracal station node dispatcher, with all localities in the country and abroad.

The town houses a football club, several shops and bars, the remains of the ancient Sucidava castrum, inside of which lies a "Secret Fountain" (an unusual piece of engineering); the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral (one of the largest buildings of its kind in Romania), as well as a monumental statue in the middle of the town square commemorating the use of Corabia's facilities in the initial attack during the Romanian War of Independence. Corabia also has an important archaeological museum with, inter alia, a remarkable collection of Roman pottery. From the town harbour, one can make trips along the Danube, with stops at the nearby Baloiu island.

The city offers many possibilities of accommodation in 2-3 stars hotels and hostels, swimming pools, beaches, restaurants and self-service dining facilities, catering services.

Important cultural and historical attractions are: the Museum of Ethnography and Archaeology, the Ruins of the "Sucidava" ancient fortress, the Independence Monument (1877) Siliştioara, churches in Corabia (Olt).
