The village is at the half distance between Győr and Mosonmagyaróvár, on the right bank of the Danube, where the geographical areas Szigetköz, Hanság and the Moson Plain meet. By car you can access it by turning off from Highway M1 or long-distance road 1, but there are scheduled long-distance bus lines to Mecsér from Győr as well. The first inhabitants of the place for sword makers. According to certain ideas the name of the place which is of Slavonic origin comes from here and means sword making master. According to another presumption the name Mecsér comes from the word “mocsár” (marsh, moor).

In the late middle age, and at the beginning of modern times the population of the settlement was composed of fishermen, trackers and shepherds. In the village you can visit two dwelling houses, one of a  riverman, and one of a ship miller, restored to the state as such were in the corresponding age.

It is worth to visit the neo-Norman Church erected by the Weinckheim Counts, and consecrated in 1900, where on 8 October each year there is a parish fest (church-ale) for Our Lady of Hungary. Mecsér hosts several  sports and cultural events, and ones the aim of which is to keep alive or to revive folk traditions. The most important of all these is “Ladikos Fesztivál” (Wherryman Festival) with folk music performances, folk plays, dishes made of fish and accompanied high quality wine. The greatest touristic attraction of the village is the Rigópuszta farm, with buildings with thatched roves and the autochthonal Hungarian animals. The farm presents the culture  and everyday life of the Hungarian plain (puszta) authentically. Beside this, you can also go for a joyride, participate in a piglet frying party, or a horseman show, folklore program and while tasting the Hungarian specialities served in the folk pub (csárda) you can listen to gipsy music.
