Turcoaia

The Turcoaia commune is situated in the Dobrogea province, north-west of Tulcea county, on the right bank of the Danube. The locality covers a distance of 3.5 km and is 64 km from the city of Tulcea and 18 km from the town of Macin, near the western slope of Mount Iacob-Deal. The commune can be seen from afar, either from the river and from the road Macin-Tulcea (DN22D) which also provides accessibility in the area.

The commune is on the place where, with two thousand years ago, one of the main cities of the Getae, Troesmis, was placed. Troesmis was throughout the ancient period, an important strategic point, the earliest mention of it being in the  Pontic epistles of Ovidius. Around 100 a.d. it became a Roman military center, developing a civil settlement between East Citadel and West Citadel, where artisans and merchants were established.

Specific activities of the area are agriculture, fisheries, forestry and stone exploitation from quarries.

The most important tourist attraction is the getic citadel  Troesmis, whose ruins are located about 3 km from the village. Other attractions in the area are volcanic lake Iacobdeal, Macin Mountains National Park - with its sights consisting of fauna and flora diversity, spectacular scenery - and  leisure park in Turcoaia. Sports can be practiced such as Paragliding on the Chervant Hill and sport fishing on Macin arm which borders the village.

The Turcoaia village organizes an annual show for young talent, a festival that was founded four years ago, and every year is becoming better known in the country. Duration of festival is five days in June-August each year.
