The city is located in the extreme south-eastern Romania, being located on the Lake Techirghiol (12 square km, depth of 10-15 m), 16 km from the city of Constanta, close to the Black Sea (3 kilometers). Access is made on Route 38 or the county road that connects North Eforie to Techirghiol. Legends argue that the name comes from Techir`s donkey or Asinus vulgaris techirghiolensis, both getting blocked in the from the lake`s shore. In an attempt to exit the mud, the old man realized that his eyes could distinguish the light again, and his feet, long powerless, began to move again.

News spread about the healing, and a flood of people came on shore of the lake bathing and anointing them with the mud to find healing. In the city, there are areas of archaeological importance, bearing traces of Hamangia-Cernavodă culture. There are also coins from Roman times, documents from the Ottoman period, documents belonging to Mihail Kogălniceanu, the shelter house built by Constantin Tănase and the holiday homes of Mircea Eliade, Cezar Petrescu, Tudor Arghezi and Jean Constantin. Techirghiol is a unique city in the world, benefiting from the existence of special natural conditions. The climate, mud and salt water of the lake make this a spa destination, known since 1899, when Techirghiol Asylum opened.. It`s a famous destination with an atmosphere of healing. Since 1854 appeared the first documentary about the therapeutic qualities of the mud, when an Ottoman army commander heals his wounded arm. The resort`s activity focuses on health tourism due to the curative properties of Techirghiol Lake. The salt water and highly mineralized and mud of organic origin are extremely popular remedies in treating various diseases such as chronic rheumatism, anemia, rickets, hypothyroidism, etc.

Currently, Techirghiol resort has five treatment facilities, a spa sanatorium for adults and another for children with mobility disabilities (permanent regime), a sanatorium for children with rheumatic diseases and a basis for treatment based on outdoor sessions of heliotherapy. Techirghiol Lake has an area of ​​approximately 12 square kilometers. Around it are narrow strips of beach which are frequented by those seeking mud for treatment.

The tourist attractions include: St. Mary Monastery, whose wooden church was built in the seventeenth century and is considered a historical monument.

With the monastery there is the treatment facility "St. Pantelimon ". The Balneary Sanatorium; the Pavilion for cold baths. Other tourist attractions are the sea coast, Techirghiol saltwater lake, the spa mud, the wooden church "Adormirea Maicii Domnului ", built in 1750. Local events include activities related to different ethnic celebrations, the National Festival of Pop Music the "Voice of Hope" in Techirghiol, literary circles, competitions, contests and exhibitions of drawings made by local children's. Exhibitions of paintings and sculpture; the "Days of Techirghiol"; the Humor Festival "Constantin Tanase"; the organization Flowers Fair "Expoflora" (May); the organization of “Monastery Products Fair” (August).
