The commune includes the village with the same name, established in a customs area funded by the Austrian  administration in the 18th Century, in order to supervise the river traffic. The commune is a part of the National Park Portile de Fier, a protected natural area of national interest, situated in the counties Caras Severin and Mehedinti.

Main touristic objectives:

  • The ethnographic museum, located inside the school building.
  • Historical monument: The Tricule Medieval Fortress (16th Cent.), that was composed of three towers which formed a triangle. It was built in order to protect the country from the Turkish invasions.
  • The paleontological natural reservation „Fosil-bearing area Svinita”, 95 ha – protected natural area of national interest, situated along the Danube, upstreams from the village Svinita. It is famous in Europe, due to the fact that several ammonites from the Medium Jurassic (Dogger) where discovered. It is also one of the most important fossil-bearing areas in the Carpathians.
  • Natural Area „Natura 2000” – Area of Special Protection of the Avi-fauna „Almajului and Locvei Mountains”, 10.200,7 ha. 11% of the surface of the commune Svinita is a part of this area.
  • Natural Area „Natura 2000” – Area of Special Protection of the Avi-fauna „Cursul Dunarii – Bazias – Portile de Fier”, 156.619,6 ha. 87% of the surface of the commune Svinita is a part of this area.
  • The ruins of the Roman tower on the Rajiste Hill, in Svinita, 2nd cent. AD
