It is situated on the isthmus between Lake Taşaul and Lake Siutghiol at a distance of 10 km from Constanta and has a large beach and a marine environment rich in aerosols. The first evidence of the existence of communities on this land is belonging to the Middle Palaeolithic, about 100.000-35.000 BC. This period corresponds to the end of the third inter ice age (Riess-Wurm) and the first part of the next ice age (Wurm), phenomena that have important consequences on the flora and fauna of Dobrogea and on the human communities. In the feudal period, on the Roman-Byzantine ruins of the Cape Midia developed Zanauarda city, which comes to prove the continuity of habitation on the territory of the current city of Năvodari.

This fact indicates a strong circulation, economic exchange and commercial activities, using marine waterways and the natural drainage of the lake Taşaul into the sea. The first documentary mentioning dates from the Ottoman government, in 1421, under the name of Caracoium (name derived from Turkish words Kara and koyum, translated by black sheep) which subsequently became Carachioi name (from the words Turkish koy kara, meaning "white village"). The construction of Midia-Năvodari Petrochemical Unit and later on the Poarta Albă-Midia-Năvodari Channel led to a demographic explosion in 1983, when the population reached 26,000 inhabitants.

Năvodari city developed around the industrial platform Petromidia, the largest refinery in south-eastern Europe. The refinery and the entire industrial site are served by Midia-Năvodari port, which was designed and built for this type of activity. Also, in recent years, the Năvodari city was noted as a landmark for tourist activity. In this respect, a major attraction of the town is Năvodari camping complex which is considered to be the largest in south-eastern Europe, with a capacity of over 4.800 beds.

The most important tourist attraction is the children camping site. Other local events are represented by the Days of Năvodari City.
