The city is made up of Basarabi locality and Siminoc village. Murfatlar City is about halfway along north-south direction of Dobrogea Plateau, on the railway which is linking Constanta to Cernavodă. The locality is situated in the pre-Balkan platform of Dobrogea, where the landscape is composed of gently sloping hillsides at the confluence of valleys.

In the area of Basarabi locality several valleys converge, among which Seacă Valley, Basarabi, Şerpelea and Siminoc Valley, all converging in the Danube-Black Sea Channel, encompassing arrangements on the lower course and in the confluences. There are three distinct landforms: hills with altitudes of 80-130m (Maltezeanu), ghermele (or mounds) with 15-80 m (Siminoc) and valleys (Carasu, Siminoc, Şerpelea).

Basarabi locality is located on Carasu valley, being bordered in the south by the chalk hills with heights of 100-105 m, consisting of layers of white chalk, which alternate with thin layers of gray clay. In addition, from these hills, on a clear day you can see the waving hills south-west of Adamclisi. The alternating hills and valleys compose a varied landscape, with an attractive perspective. On the occasion of archeological uncovering procedures, performed on a chalk quarry on the hill called Tibişir, in 1957, there were found cave churches, carved in rock, along with galleries places for graves, surface houses that are built of blocks of chalk, on the terraces formed by filling with sterile material.

Archaeologists have determined that a cave is a whole ancient human settlement. We could say that is the first evidence of a settlement inhabited on the city`s extend. Basarabi-Murfatlar cave complex is located in proximity to the city, here being the first church on the Romanian territory. The monastic ensemble includes cave churches, rooms, galleries, etc. Specific activities of the area consist of viticulture, mining and milling chalk and also activities associated with the port along the Danube River-Black Sea Channel.

Tourist attractions include Murfatlar Vineyard, Vine and Wine Museum, Botanical Reserve Fântâniţa Murfatlar and the Cave Complex of Crete Churches. Of the local events, a special importance has Murfatlar days. Facilities offered to investors include access to the railway and the Danube River-Black Sea Channel, and the great proximity to Constanţa and Medgidia.
