The commune Maglavit is composed by the villages Hunia and Maglavit. It is situated in the south-west part of the county Dolj, at a distance of 15 km from the town Calafat and 80 km from the town Drobeta Turnu Severin.

This village situated in the south-west of the province Oltenia was attested during the period 1581-1591. The village became famous in 1935, when a shepherd, Petrache Lupu, had an epiphany of God. Since then, thousands of people from the whole country came to see him, transforming the village into a well-known place of pilgrimage. An expression was also born “People come here as if this where Maglavit”

Main touristic objectives:

  • The Monastery Maglavit, built in 1936, in memory of the epiphany of God that Petrache Lupu. It was closed by the communists, and re-opened in 1990.
  • The church “Sfantul Nicolae” (1845)
  • Lakes, forests, meadows, hills, and water springs.
