The commune of Gradistea belongs to Calarasi County. The commune is located in the south of the county, on the road that links the county capital to the town of Oltenita, 12 km away from the former. At the border of the endless plains of Baragan towards the meadow, the component villages of the commune, Gradistea, Cunesti, Rasa and Bogata are located at the south end of Calarasi terrace; they are part of the long chain of settlements positioned along the Danube River. The villages are spread on Calarasi-Oltenita road, on a length of 12 km. The nearest railway station is that of Calarasi.
The commune of Gradistea is bordered by the villages of Cuza Voda, Alexandru Odobescu, Ciocanesti and Independenta. South of the commune flows the Danube River – Romania’s border with Bulgaria.
Specific activities: agriculture, zootechny – stock breeding, fish breeding
Tourist attractions
- Archaeological excavations prove the presence of a local population since the Neolithic Age and are included in the first phase of the Boian culture - Bolintineanu phase. Representative of the late Neolithic Age is Gumelniţa culture. Fragments of pottery, Dacian vessels, Greek amphorae and Roman vases were found in Cunesti village.
- Churches in the villages of Cunesti (built in 1852), Rasa (built in 1838), Bogata (built in 1885).
- Obelisk of Russian soldiers who died in the war of 1877 - 1878, in the courtyard of “Sf. Nicolae” church in the village of Bogata.
- Stone cross, Orthodox religion, the eighteenth century, in the courtyard of “Sf. Nicolae” church in the village of Rasa.
