The commune Gighera is composed by three villages: Gighera, in the centre, Zaval and Nedeia. It is settled in the lower course of the river Jiu and it is bordered by the commune Gangiova in the north, the commune Ostroveni in the east and south-east, the river Danube and the Bulgarian border in the south, and the commune Macesu de Jos in the west. The village was attested for the first time in 1830.

Main touristic objectives:

  • The forest Zaval – thermal waters
  • The church “Sfantu Dumitru” and Grigore Teologu (1848, restored in 1936)
  •  The church “Sfantul Nicolae”, in Zaval (1845)
  • The church “Sf. Mare Mucenic Dimitrie”, in Nedeia

Events:

  • The festival „In padure la Zaval” – every year, the first Sunday in august
  • Weekly fair, every Friday in Zaval

Accomodation: the camping Zaval, included in the European touristic circuit
