Eselnita

The village is located in the Danube Gorge (between Moldova Veche and Gura Vaii). The three quiet water gulfs formed in the point where three streams flow through the village from north to south, are known as: Eselnita, Mala and  Mraconia. 86% of the administrative territory of the village is occupied by forests and large hydrographic basins which where formed after the construction of the Portile de Fier I hydropower plant.

Main touristic objectives:

• The Natural area Natura 2000 – Protected avifauna „Cursul Dunării - Baziaş - Porţile de Fier” (10.200,7 ha) – 3% of the surface of the commune is part of this area.
• The Natural area Natura 2000 – Protected avifauna „Munţii Almăjului şi Locvei” (156.619,6 ha) - 55% of the surface of the commune is part of this area.
• The Natural Reservation “Cazanele Mici si Cazanele Mari” (215 ha).
• The river Mraconia, a confluent of the Danube, which forms a beautiful estuary, where numerous tourists camp, fish, swim and practice water sports.
• The ruins of the Monastery Marcunea, which was destroyed in various occasions by the Turkish during their expansion towards the Habsburg Empire. The walls can only be seen when the waters of the Danube diminish.
• Tabula Traiana – monument carved in rock on the right side of the Danube, visible fron the Romanian side at km 17.
• Eselnita Parish Museum founded in 1996 near the Orthodox Church;
• The ethnographic Museum “Doina si Teodor Grigore” hosts a number of costumes from all areas of the country comprising over 1000 pieces. The collection includes furniture, traditional occupations, traditional wear, ceramics, icons, photographs from the villages Eselnita, Dubova, Ogradena.
