Cetate is a commune situated in the county Dolj, in the Danube Meadow, at the border of the counties Mehedinti and Dolj, on the National Roads DN 56 Calafat – Drobeta Turnu – Severin, and DJ Craiova – Cetate. It is bordered by the communes Hunia in the south, Izamsa in the north-west and Unirea in the north-west. The commune is composed by the villages Fantana Banului and Moreni.

In his book „Travelling on the Danube and in Bulgaria”, Dimitrie Bolintineanu depicts Cetate as a village „situated on the hills, between two escarpments, similar to a little fortress”, „that whitnessed the war between the Russian and the Turkish people in 1827-1829”.

The diggings revealed in the suoth-west part of the village traces of an ancient Geto-dacic civilization. This is why the village is called Cetate („The Fortress”).

The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture, favoured by the existence of the sewage channel Cetate - Galicea Mare, and also pisciculture.

Main touristic objectives:

  • The churches „Sfantul Nicolae”, 1860
  • The manor house of the lord Constantin Druga, that nowadays the locals call “Druga castle”, due to the highly ornamental architectonic style of the building, a combination between the Gothic and the Baroque style.
  • The 3 km long beach to the Danube
  •  A cosy motel, situated at the entranceway to the village
  • The literary creation centre, funded inside one of the administrative buildings of the old port, by the well-known poet and revolutionist Mircea Dinescu.
  • Due to the fact that it is situated in a point where the counties Dolj and Mehedinti meet, the commune Cetate represents a gate to the touristic areas that are already included in the national circuit, Drobeta Turnu Severin, Orsova, Baile Herculane.
