Calafat lies on the VII-Danube river corridor and the pan-European corridor IV which starts in Germany and ends in Istanbul and Thessaloniki. Proiectul construirii unui pod în zona Calafat-Vidin datează din anul 1925.

The project of constructing a bridge in the area Calafat-Vidin dates from the year 1925. Podul va avea o lungime totală de 1971 m si va costa peste 100 de milioane de euro. The bridge will have a total length of 1,971 m and it will cost over 100 million Euros.

The city has shopping centres, hospitals and educational facilities at all levels. Transportation is provided both internally, by buses and trams, and externally - rail, air and road transport; there is a ferry and three ports for light boats.

It was founded in the 14th century by Genovese colonists, who employed a large numbers of workmen (Calafati) in repairing ships. Această industrie a dat numele oraşului. This industry gave the town its name.

This diverted the initial Russian attack and allowed Ahmed Pasha to consolidate his forces in Calafat. Important cultural and historical attractions are: the Marincu’s Palace (XIX century), the Art Museum of Calafat - the museum has a Romanian contemporary art collection: painting, graphic designs of artists from the Dolj county, paintings by Nicolae Grigorescu, Henri Catargi, Theodor Pallady, sculptures by Ion Irimescu, Nicu Enea, George Demetrescu Mirea, and a collection of folk art; Monumentul 1877-Calafat, memory of the Independence War, from the Danube banks (near Calafat) the first cannon volleys were fired upon Vidinul. Reservations and natural monuments

The Ciuperceni Ornithological reserve - an important place for deposit the eggs, for many kinds of birds, being the only place from the Danube meadow, without seawalls.

The city offers some possibilities of accommodation in one hotel and one hostel, one classical restaurant.

The local traditions and celebrations are worth mentioning: the Calafat days (early May), National music camp (early August).
