The commune Bistret is composed by four villages (Bistretu Nou, Plosca, Brandusa, Bistret) and is situated in the Danube meadow, on the north-west border of the lake Bistret, in the south of the county Dolj, on the National Road DN 55A, at a distance of 65 km from Craiova and 35 km from Bailesti.
In this place there where two Geto-dacian settlements from the 9th – 6th cent. BC, and a Roman castrum from the 2nd – 3rd cent. AD.
The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture, mainly plants farming and animal raising.
Main touristic objectives:
- The churches „Sfantul Nicolae” and „Arhanghelul Mihail” – 1826-1823.
- Fishing in the lake Calugareni
- The lake Bistret, the second largest in Romania, (1867 ha)
- Byzantine castrum from the times of the emperor Constantine the Great, on the left bank of the Danube.
