Tutrakan is a town in northeastern Bulgaria and is an administrative centre of the homonymous municipality, part of Silistra district. It is situated on the Danube, opposite the Romanian town of Olteniţa (to which it is linked through a ferryboat), 62 km west of Silistra, 58 km east of Ruse and 307 km northeast of Sofia.
The town was founded by the Ancient Romans in the 1st century under the name Transmarisca. The settlement was part of the Roman military boundary and reached its apogee in the 4th century under the reign of Diocletian. The ancient town and fortress were destroyed in the beginning of the 7th century. The town, with its present name, emerged in the end of the century, as a military centre through the Middle Ages as part of the Bulgarian Kingdom, which was conquered by the Ottomans in the late 14th century.
The most important cultural landmarks are: The St. Nicholas Church (built in 1862), Community Centre (from 1873), Historical Museum, Exposition “Tutrakan epopee”, National Memorial "Military Cemetery", Monument of soldiers (Bulgarians, Romanians, Germans etc.) who died for the liberation of Bulgaria (the last two near Tutrakan) etc. During its millennium existence, Tutrakan was related to fishing and manufacturing of fishing nets. A Fishing hamlet is preserved in its authentic form, with fishing nets and houses. The only Ethnographic museum "Danubian Fishing and Boat Construction" in Bulgaria was opened here in 1974.
The natural attractions in the area are many: the protected site "Kalimok - Brаshlen" (west of the town); the protected site "Pozharevski Islands" (east of the town); the protected area "Saya kulak" (historic place, east of the town); the important ornithological area “Stenata” ("The Wall") (southwest of the town); the "Cypress Marsh" (west of town on the Radetski island) etc.
Regular events in the city are: the Apricot Fiesta (in July), the Feast of the Danube River (in August), the Cross "By bicycle along the Danube" (between Silistra and Tutrakan) etc.
The future tourism perspectives are related to development of cultural, cognitive, eco, rural, fishing, horse racing and wine tourism.
