Ruse is a city, municipal and district centre of the North Central Region of Bulgaria. It is situated 251 km from the capital of Bulgaria Sofia. It is the Bulgarian main port on the Danube, important economic centre and occupies the fifth place among the cities in Bulgaria as regards the population. It is an important railway station and in its neighbourhood is situated the onliest bridge over the Danube between Bulgaria and Romania.
In Ruse there are the biggest duty free zone in Bulgaria and one of the first industrial parks. The main industries are textile, agro-food processinng, petrochemical and chemical idustries, machine- and shipbuilding, metal-working, electrotechnics and electronics, automation and furniture industry
Ruse is a city with 23 centuries history. The Thracian settlement was followed by the Sexaginta Pristis roman fortress, destroyed later by avars and slaves. The ruins of the fortress is now an open air museum. During the First Bulgarian Kingdom the built nearby town is called Ruse, later Gyurgevo and during the Othoman rule –Ruschuk. After the Liberation war the name Ruse was restored.
The centre of the city is famous with its unique architecture combining baroque, modern, neoclassical and secession buildings. The monument of freedom and the building of the Public theatre “Sava Ognianov” are symbols of the city.
The other places one need to visit in Ruse are the house of the Nobel prize winner for literature Elias Kaneti, the Palace of Batenberg (Regional Historical Museum), the Pantheon of Renaissance Revival (an open air exposition), Baba Tonka house-museum (in the house of Nikola Obretenov), the house-museum of Anastasia and Zahari Stoyanov, the calvary places of the national heroes Angel Kanchev and Stefan Karadzha, the Renaissance park, the buildings of the Mitropolia, the column of Mahmud, the navy tower, the orphanage “Wangemann” and many others.
In Ruse there are five community centres, several theatres, churches and museums, regional library, sport complexes and many others.
