Kovachitsa is a village in northwestern Bulgaria. It is located in Lom Municipality, Montana District, 12 km east of Lom.
The history of the village dates from the end of Chiprovtsi Uprising against the Ottoman rule (in 1688). After the defeat of the uprising, a part of the survivors settled along the Danube river near Lom. During the cholera epidemic time some of the people moved to the local “kovach” (en. “blacksmith”), who lived 5 km from the river, where the village lies by now and this was the origin of the name Kovachitsa.
The village is famous with its watermelons (bulg. "lyubenitsi" or “dini”) and orchards in the area of "Stranieto" on the Danube.
Near the village there is a dam, which offers plenty of fish (pikes, catfish, cod and others). The nature is really astonishing. Near the west end of the dam, there is a century-old tree - an oak.
The village has а Secondary School "Cyril and Methodius", a Kindergarten and a Monument to the victims of the wars.
An annual gathering of the village Kovachitsa is held every last weekend of August: all relatives, brothers, children and friends from all over Bulgaria and, in recent years, from different parts of the world.
Another annual celebrating is the Day of Ilinden (the 2nd August): this festival takes place on the Danube bank.
