Baykal is a village located in Northern Bulgaria on the Danube. It is located 40 km from the Municipal centre of Dolna Mitropolia and 45 km from the District centre of Pleven. North of the village is the Danube island Boril.
The old name of the village is Beshlii. In 1934 it was named Boril and in 1951 was renamed Baykal.
There are remains of prehistoric settlements near the village, such as: the ancient town Palatium of 1st century BC, in the locality "Selishteto" (northeast of the village), an ancient necropolis (west of Palatium), ancient settlements in the areas "Shirok dol", "Yamandidol", a Roman road (south of the village) to "Yamandidol" connecting the fortresses "Valeriana" and "Palatium" etc.
The first school was built in 1853: it is one of the oldest in the area. The first church "St. Georges Victorious" dates from 1874: it is the oldest temple in the municipality. The Community centre “Probuda" was founded in 1925: it is the educational and cultural centre in the village.
At the historic site of "The Monuments" a monument "Septemvriytsi" is erected. It is located on the banks of the Danube near the port. There is also a site for bird watching. There are four protected areas with rich flora and fauna around the village.
The Port functions until 1934. It maintains regular line vessels to Corabia (Romania). It is planned to develop a marina.
The community centre has an authentic folklore group "Kalushari" which performs local folkdances.
A biking tour is regularly organized on the route Dolni Vadin - Baykal - Gigen, which is part of European Corridor Euro-Velo 6.
River tourism is also practiced: The International Danube Regatta TID makes here a little rest. Near the port area, the necessary infrastructure was built for camping and recreation of the participants.
The outskirts of the village of Baykal with its hilly terrain and numerous cultural and natural attractions offer good conditions for development of different types of tourism: cultural, ornithological, eco, hunting and biking etc.
