Archar is a village in northwestern Bulgaria. It is part of the Dimovo Municipality, Vidin District. It lies on both banks of the Archar river on its inflow into the Danube. It is located on the main road Vidin-Lom. The distance to Lom is 27 km to Vidin 28 km, to Dimovo 17 km and to Sofia 130 km.
The village exists from the Roman time under the name Ratiaria (or Raetiaria, Retiaria, Reciaria, Razaria, later named Colonia Ulpia Traiana Ratiaria), in 2ndcentury as a permanent station of the Roman Danube fleet. Located 2 km west of the village Archar. From the ancient city (municipium) began an important route through Nis to the Adriatic sea. At the time of Emperor Aurelian, Ratiaria became the principal town of the Roman province of Dacia. Chroniclers note that Ratiaria was a rich and populated city.
There are also other ruins: of Roman necropolis (west of the village) and of Turkish fortification (east of the village, in the locality of Kaleto).
Other attractions in Archar are: the Church, the Monument of Romanian soldiers who died in 1878 for the liberation of Bulgaria, the Community centre, The School (built in 1832) etc.
The perspectives are for development of cultural, cognitive and rural tourism.
