Tát is lying on the bank of the right branch of the Danube, on the north-eastern side of the Gerecse. Route 10 and the Esztergom-Almásfüzitő railway line cross it.  It is easy to access also by coach; it is at a distance of 45 km from Budapest, and at a distance of 10 km from Esztergom. Resulting from its favourable geographical location it was inhabited already in the prehistoric age; stone devices, dishes and pottery remainders originating from the copper and bronze ages were excavated from the area of the village. The most important event of the history of the settlement, the famous battle of Tát, took place in 1685. Prince Charles of Lorraine encountered the army of Saitan Ibrahim. The battle finished with Christian victory brought demolition to the village, due to what diligent German and Austrian settlers arrived to the settlement. During the 1950s the population of the village doubled, thanks to the social-realist sample housing estate, the Tát-Kertváros, built by the Dorog mining company.

The countrywide blue tour route, which has several interesting stations, leads to the south of Tát. The highest point of the region is the Nagy-Gete (455 metres), from where a wonderful sight opens to the village and the Danube. Going ahead on the marked route one can arrive to the special formation of the Mogyorósi cliff. The Sátorkőpusztai Cave (Sátorkőpusztai barlang), which can be visited in the presence of a guide provided by the BEBTE association, is nearby the settlement. The sights of the cavity system formed by thermal waters are its crystal formations, underground spring and its biology. There are several restaurants and a fisherman’s wayhouse operating at the settlement; the later has been reconstructed to a hotel capable to accommodate 60 persons. The statue of the pair of Gods located nearby the wayhouse was inaugurated in 2006. The statue is the work of Tibor Szervátiusz, artist awarded with Kossuth Prize. Fishermen can find a fishermen’s lodge of high standards with an indoor ice-rink operating all year round in the neighbourhood.
