Rajka

Rajka is lying in the north-western corner of Hungary on the Hungarian-Slovakian border. Its border-crossing point is one of the busiest ones in the country. The settlement is accessible on highway M1, on route 15 and through the Budapest Hegyeshalom-Rajka railway line. It is at a distance of only 20 km from the capital of Slovakia; it is accessible on route E75/E65 and by the bus line 801 starting from Bratislava. Thanks to the closeness of the Öreg- and the Mosoni-Duna (Old and Mosoni Danube) good water touring possibilities welcome the guests. There are both a camping site and a hotel operating in the settlement. It is a matter of curiosity that the parents of Frenc Liszt, the world-famed composer and pianist, lived here.

First written mentioning of the settlement originates from more than 800 years ago. In those days its inhabitants dealt with crab-catching. After the Tatar invasion settlers from Bavaria and Alsace-Lorraine arrived to the village, which got its German name, Ragendorf that time. Even in the 18^th century it was recorded as a settlement of German majority. From the noted left to the after ages it occurs that the nobles living here had the right to build their houses a few metres ahead, so they could have sight on the street also in the length. Such houses can be seen at the settlement even in our days. The Gothic Roman catholic church of Rajka originates from the 14^th century. The evangelic church built by the Germans was sanctified in 1784. At the nearby crossing point of the three borders, the border of Hungary, Slovakia and Austria, a park of statues was established in 1992, where the works of the artists of the three nations can be seen.
