Rácalmás

Rácalmás opens to the Danube from a height, at a 60 kilometre distance in southern direction from the capital between the settlements Kulcs and Dunaújváros. The highway M6 and the main route 6 are located directly besides the settlement. We can approach the village by rail through line Pusztaszabolcs-Dunaújváros-Paks. From Dunaújváros – from the Szalki-island – a built up cycle track leads to the town that is illuminated by night. Under the settlement there is a long cellar system, which was caved during the Turkish times as a hiding-place. Many grapes are cultivated in the surroundings, therefore today already wine is stored in the cellars.

The Jankovich-curia Event and Tourist Centre situated at the northern part of the city bordering the Danube offers diversified programs and services. The institution functions also as an ecotourist centre with the task to present the fauna and flora of the Rácalmási-islands Nature Reserve. The authentically renewed curia serves as place of conferences, events and exhibitions. It has also a gastronomic building, where the dishes of the traditional rustic kitchen are available. We can try old crafts in the house of handicrafts and activities.

The Flood Area study pathway starting from the centre leads to the Nagy-island lying in front of Rácalmás through a bridge, where we can obtain detailed information about the flora and fauna of the landscape as well as about the history of the settlement. The study path is diversified by rain houses and bird feeders, marshlands can be approached on planked pile bridges. The island ensures ideal camping places for nature-lovers. Kayak and canoe is for rent, however also biking tours are organized in the area of the nature reserve. The surroundings are presented by motorboat for visitors, who wish a more comfortable relaxation.

Rácalmás is famous of its pumpkin festival. During the festival straw and pumpkin figures are already waiting the visitors at the border of the settlement. This time the house portals of the city are decorated with inventive pumpkin compositions. The Jankovich curia is waiting the visitors with gastronomic festival, pumpkin and local dish specialities, wines of famous wine-growing regions, culture programs and exhibitions.
