Nyergesújfalu lays on the right bank of the Danube. From the South, the slopes of the Transdanubian Hills form its natural borders. The settlement situated at a distance of 15 km from Esztergom can be accessed by long-distance road 10 or by the Esztergom-Almásfüzitő railway line. Some time the settlement was called Nyergedszeg. An important post and relay station was here, thank to which there were several saddlers in the area but also horse breeding was highly developed. Kernstok Károly, painter was living here, but Derkovits Gyula was also working in the art camp of the settlement .The Kernstok-villa can be visited under the address Kossuth Lajos utca 196.
This area is very rich in natural beauties, therefore, it is an ideal place for bikers and for those who want to make tours by foot. The National Blue Tour Route passes through Pusztamarót a locality belonging to Nyergesújfalu. In the winter, one can practice cross-country skiing here. From the so-called Sánc-hegy (Mound Hill) in the Southern part of the town one can enjoy a beautiful view. If you go up to this point, it is worth to visit the Millenary Monument. The huts of anglers alongside the lakes from accumulated rainwater in deserted mines offer a nice leisure-time activity. The Southern slopes of the hills at Nyergesújfalu belong to the Ászár-Neszmély wine-district. There are more than one hundred cellars here that produce their own wines. Lately, there are all and more events associated with wine in the town.
The most important monument of the settlement is a baroque church built in the second half of the 18th century. The building, dedicated to Saint Michael, is situated in Kossuth Lajos street. The patron of the construction was Maria-Therese. The statue of Saint Steven (Szent István), erected in 2004, is just adjacent to the Church. The Nyergesi János Memorial House and Monument of Village Architecture was opened in 1996. In its collection there are pieces of interest and written documents from the history of the settlement from all ages ranging from the stone age to our days. The everyday of the German who were settled here is shown by a furnished room and the tools and appliances exhibited in the garden. The Memorial House can be visited by appointment, which you can make through the cultural centre or the Nyergesújfalu Baráti Kör Egyesület.
