Nagyszentjános is situated at a distance of 25 km from Győr, in the centre of the Plain in North-western Hungary. It is very easy to access the settlement by public road, as long distance road No. 1 passes nearby from the north, and Highway M1 from the south. If you want to come to Nagyszentjános by Highway M1, you have to turn off at the Gönyű junction point. The village has a railway station since 1856: it is on the Budapest-Vienna line. The first written mention of the settlement is from 1216, in an inventory made by Pope Innocent III where the village is shown as a holding of the Pannonhalma Abbey. Following the Turkish ravage the Esterházy princes brought settlers to revive the place:  they were engaged in farming and animal breeding. In the beginning of the 19th century the Esterházy family built a castle in the village. The village started to prosper thereafter, when it was connected to the railways. In 1870 Esterházy Móric let the estate on lease to Auspitz Pál, who built a distillery on it. The State Farm established in1949 gave work to many people from the village and its neighbourhood: many moved in even from other countries, such as Vas and Zala, because the State Farm offered an employment opportunity. There is a forest of  700 ha next to the village, in its outer administrative area. It is excellent for hunting. Another sight of the village is the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to Martyr Saint Liborius , the construction of which started in 1997.
