Mosonmagyaróvár is situated in the north-westerly edge of the country where the Lajta and Moson-Danube rivers  meet. Highway M1, long-distance roads 1 and 15 (the latter heading for Bratislava) pass through the town and the Budapest-Vienna international railway has also a station in Mosonmagyaróvár. The town is at a distance of 15 km from both the Austrian and the Slovak frontiers. The cultural and historical monuments and the spa of the town, the nearby  backwaters and rivers offer a vast variety of leisure activities and attract a great number of Hungarian and foreign tourists. There are several associations in the Szigetköz that organize water tours and related programs. The water tours touching Mosonmagyaróvár  explore  Lajta, Moson-Danube and the Upper-Szigetköz branches with camping sites and other accommodation for the oarsmen.

In the vicinity of the Lajta Moson-Danube delta, there was a castle built on Roman ruins already a thousand years ago. The commercial road with the greatest traffic in all Hungary, the one that headed towards Vienna went through the settlement, thus, vast quantities of grain and livestock passed by. Its harbour hosted several hundred ships a year. The rich commercial town attracted many foreigners too. As a result, it had two main streets, the “German street (today’s main street) and Magyar utca (Hungarian street). In our history both  Moson and Magyaróvár, which were two distinct towns then, were the county seat of Moson county. As a result of the changes in the frontier in the World War the area lost its importance. The two towns were united in 1939.

The Óvár castle, one time a military fortress, hosts the University of  Agriculture since 1818. There is an exhibition presenting the famous researchers who have ever worked in the institution and their work. One of the oldest buildings in the town is the Catholic church in baroque style in the downtown area. Charles Habsburg and his wife, Isabelle were buried in the basement of the parsonage adjacent to it. The building in neoclassic style under the address Fő utca 19 hosts the exhibition halls of Hanság Museum. The Cselley House also belongs to this 102 years old institution: it presents the works of famous Hungarian painters from the 19th and 20th centuries. The old City Hall and the building of the Piarist Monastery are also remarkable monuments. The Hungarian and foreign tourists visiting Mosonmagyaróvár use to visit the spa and thermal bath situated in a distance of a few minutes walks only from the old town. Adjacent to the spa there is a hotel, apartments, and a medical centre. Taken its curative power, the thermal water  spring  of the town falls within the best five in Europe.
