Lipót is situated in the Szigetköz, near to the Öreg-Duna (main branch of the Danube). The settlement, situated at a distance of 25 km from Győr, can be accessed by car on road 1401 turning off at either Darnózseli or Hédervár. If one wishes to visit it from the direction of Mosonmagyaróvár then the better is through Halászi or Püski. The village is at a distance of 20 km from Highway M1-es and long-distance Road 1. From the north the dead channel of Danube which has special protection forms the borderline of the village. With its reeded and bulrush covered parts the dead channel and its and neighbourhood are favourite nesting places and habitat of water birds. You can get acquainted with the area by the help of a 7 km long nature trail which is open to the public and there are resting and bird-watching points on it to make it even more interesting and informative.
During the history Lipót was destroyed by wars, epidemics and floods. As a consequence, the village had to be rebuilt several times, and then moved to some more safe place . When walking in the village you will see that the streets follow the route of previous water courses, and the houses were built on small artificial humps made on tiny “islands”, thus, during floods people could travel by boats in between them. The inhabitants lived on the resources of and opportunities provided by the river: they were fishermen, trackers, gold-washers. They sold the fish caught in Vienna and Bratislava. Following the canalization of the river, they were compelled to change to farming and agriculture.
Lipót is famous among tourists for its spa. The first thermal spring was bored in 1968, and since then, a vast number of patients suffering from locomotive and joint problems came here. In 2002 the thermal spa was renewed and enlarged so that it became one of the most state-of-art spas in Hungary. The park on a territory of 5 hectares accommodates swimming pool, a pool for children, funny waters, and receives guests from 1 May to 30 September each year. There is a large scale of accommodation opportunities ranging from a four-star hotel to pensions and camping, and Lipót has restaurants and a rich choice of wellness services. It is worth to visit the Catholic church of Lipót from the 18th century decorated with reliefs and frescos and also to see the chestnut trees alongside the road connecting Lipót and Darnózseli. In the village there are also several smaller angling ponds.
