Kismaros is situated in the Danube Band, on the left side of the Danube, between Verőce and Nagymaros . By car it is accessible by long distance road No. 12 passing across the settlement, or by train, on the Budapest-Vác-Szob railway line. In 1973, Kismaros was merged into Verőce under the name Verőcemaros and then, in 1990, it became independent again.

The most interesting and most well-known sight of the village is the Királyréti Erdei Vasút (Királyrét Forrest Railway), laid by a Prussian Count in 1893 between Kismaros and Adolfkút to transport the wood cut in the forest. The railway line, having a rail gauge of 600 mm then was extended by the Kismaros- Danbe Bankpart, Kismaros- Verőce and Királyrét- Bujdázó branch-lines. The scheduled transport of passengers between Kismaros and Királyrét  started in 1954.  The railway converted into a Pioneer Railway (a railway operated by primary school pupils) was renovated and its gauge enlarged to 760 mm. From 1990, the railway is operated by the Ipoly Woods Co. with the support of Börzsönyi Gyermekvasút Alapítvány (Börzsöny Pioneer Train Foundation).

If one visits the village it is worth to see the Kismaros Falumúzeum (Kismaros Village Museum) presenting tools documents, photos, farming devices and the relics of religious life. The exhibition embraces the history of the village from the 18th century when the first German settlers came, until our days. Those who like hiking, can choose from several tour routes starting from here. They can stay overnight in the guest house in the woods or the resort houses in Csattogó-völgy. Csattogó-völgy awaits its guests by school in the woods (a one or two weeks‘ long visit for primary school classes, with special curriculum for this period), sports grounds (football, handball, basketball), creative camp, built outdoors cooking facility, and various events. You  can also hire a boat on the Danube if you go down to the bank. Those who would prefer angling should go to the Csattogó-völgy angling pound. There are two churches in the village. The construction of the Blessed Saint Mary Cistercian Monastery for nuns started in 1990. In 1993, the monastery was declared an abbacy. The other church of the village was built in 1827, in neo-classical style.
