Dunaújváros

Dunaújváros lies in the south-eastern part of Fejér County, on the right bank of River Danube. It can easily be approached both by road (Motorway M6, Road 6 and Road 62), rail and ship. Pentele-híd (Pentele Bridge) ensuring place both for pedestrian and cycling traffic was handed over in 2007. Since the handover of the bridge the ferries run with decreased traffic between the Óváros (Old Town) and Szalkszentmárton. In addition to the ferry port, the settlement also has an open ship station. 9 km south from the city, at the border of Kisapostag, there is a grassy airport owned by Dunaferr Repülőklub (Dunaferr Flying Club).

In 1949 the central management of Magyar Dolgozók Pártja (Party of Hungarian Labourers) decided to build the new heavy industrial centre of Hungary and the housing estate belonging to it within the public administration boundary of Pentele. Later on, the housing estate built on Pentelei-fennsík (Pentele Plateau) developed into a new town and, together with the Old Town (the Pentele Quarter) and Dunai Vasmű (Danube Iron Works), it comprises today Dunaújváros. There is no other settlement in the country where the socialist-realistic architecture could so well be observed and this is why the so-called soc-real study path has been developed here presenting the socialist ethos of the time through the quarters erected in the 1950's.

The enormous material of finds from the Bronze Age and the Roman Era having turned up in the course of the construction works has been placed in the Intercisa Museum. In addition to these finds, the museum also keeps historical and ethnographical memories. It got its name after the Roman-era settlement that once used to stand here and whose remains are displayed in a lapidarium. In the place of the Roman fortresses on Rác domb (Rác Hill) and Pap-sziget (Priest Island) ruin gardens await today those interested. More than 60 works can be seen in Nemzetközi Acélszoborpark (International Steel Sculptures Park) to be found on the bank of the Danube. Industry historical exhibitions await visitors in Kovácsmúzeum (Blacksmith Museum), in the plant historical collection of the paper factory and also in Dunai Vasmű.

For tourists coming here it is worth visiting Szalki-sziget (Szalki Island) and the arboretum on Baracsi út (Baracsi Road), where they can walk and rest in a peaceful and beautiful environment. In the wellness centre of the city outdoor and indoor pools, several experience elements, slides, medical services and fitness possibilities ensure healthy relaxation.
