Dömsöd

Dömsöd lies 40 km south of the boundary of Budapest. The settlement built along Ráckevei-Duna (Ráckeve Danube branch) can be approached by car on Road 51. The nearest railway station is in Apaj, from where the centre of Dömsöd is 7 km away. On the bank of the branch of the Danube belonging to the settlement there are weekend-houses and cottages. The river and the artificial ponds of the neighbourhood have made the village a real paradise for anglers. The settlement was established in 1939 from the unification of the two villages of Dab and Dömsöd.

Dömsöd can thank its being well-known to Petőfi Sándor whose parents rented a slaughter-house here. The poet himself also lived here between 1846 and 1847. In this period Petőfi wrote several poems and the memories of his stay are exhibited in Petőfi Emlékmúzeum (Petőfi Memorial Museum). 4 rooms of the modest peasant house built in 1823, the year when the poet was born, are furnished. In two rooms the relics related to Petőfi and his parents can be seen; in the third one the covers of the poet's volumes published abroad are on display, while the last room is furnished with pieces of furniture dating back to the end of the 19^th century. In the village there is also another showroom called Báthory Júlia Üveggyűjtemény (Báthory Júlia Glass Collection), presenting the course of life of the famous industrial artist. One of the most beautiful buildings of the village is the Calvinistic church of Dömsöd built in 1775 but it is also worth visiting the Calvinistic church of Dab and Catholic church, too, which is decorated with artistic lead-glass windows.

Those being fond of angling can choose from several angling farms in Dömsöd but can also visit the Ráckeve Danube branch. The fishing ponds are open all through the year and they provide eating and accommodation possibilities for their guests. The main profile of „Még 1000 év Dömsödért” Egyesület ("Another 1000 years for Dömsöd" Association) is popularising village tourism and in their places of accommodation authentic rural environment and catering await the guests.
