The village is located in Dunakanyar (Curve of the Danube), along Road 11, 15 km away from Esztergom and 45 km from Budapest. From the village of Nagymaros to be found on the left bank of the Danube, a ferry goes to Dömös. As the ferry port is near to the railway station of Nagymaros, Dömös can be reached easily also with the Budapest-Vác-Szob railway line. Volánbusz services Nos. 880 and 889 run to the settlement.
The history of Dömös reaches back to ancient times. Finds from Palaeolithic Age prove that a community of primitive men lived in this area reach in games. In a Copper-age grave discovered on the bank of the Danube archaeologists found a shrunk skeleton and stone tools. The motte to be found near to Árpádvár, extending to 500 by 500 metres and having the shape of an irregular polygon must have been built some 3000 years ago. After the foundation of the state, this area was the estate of the Árpád-house kings, who built hunting seats and a palace here. King Béla the 1st died in the royal palace of Dömös when his throne structure collapsed. Prince Álmos, brother of Könyves Kálmán had a provostry built here around 1107. Its partly reconstructed visitable crypt is one of the most significant architectural Árpád-era memories of our country. Weddings, too, are celebrated at the consecrated altar of the crypt located underneath the Romanesque three-bayed church.
The settlement is one of the Hungarian hiking centres. Several marked footpaths lead to the natural treasures of the neighbouring wooded mountains. Out of these the most popular path is the one marked in red leading to Dobogókő (700m). It is worth visiting Rám-szakadék (Rám Cove) and the so-called Vadállókövek renowned for their special shapes, where you can get through Szőkeforrás-völgy (Blond Spring Valley). From the 639-metre-high Prédikálószék (Preaching Chair) a wonderful view opens to Dunakanyar and Szent-Mihály hegy (Saint Michael Hill) opposite to Dömös. A camp site, boarding house and places of village accommodation wait for tourists. Dömös hosts the annually organised national meeting of hikers.
