Bölcske is located 8 kilometres southeast from Dunaföldvár, near to the geometrical centre of Hungary.  Although the settlement is located in Dunántúl (Transdanubia), geographically it belongs to the Great Plain. Bölcske can be reached by car by turning off Road 6 and by rail on the Pusztaszabolcs-Paks branch line, but it must be mentioned that its railway station is one and a half kilometres away from the village itself. With a place to cross the Danube and a port fortress, the settlement was one of the important stations of the Roman-era road network.

Bölcske is an archaeological finding place of national significance; remains have turned up from almost all historical ages in its territory. Part of the finds, e.g. tombstones, stone sculptures and stamped bricks are displayed in the Roman-era lapidarium. These finds were brought to the surface within the framework of the longest and most significant domestic underwater archaeological excavation. The other finds from the stone, copper and Roman era having turned up in the settlement can be found in the Wosinsky Mór Museum of Szekszárd and in the private local historical and archaeological collection of Bölcske.

The winemaking and the cellar-village of Bölcske consisting of 380 press-houses are also well-known. Tourists coming here are welcomed by stations of the wine route and traditional cellars, where they can taste the typical foods of the land, too. In the cellar-village, being an organic part of the village itself and surrounded by vineyards, wine festivals, wine competitions and gastronomic events are regularly organised. Thanks to the great number of challenges, the local wines achieve better and better rankings at the county-level and national competitions. The region is very rich in fish and games and the local hunting association is glad to welcome guest hunters. The banks of the Danube are visited by anglers and bathers.
