Bár is located on the right bank of the River Danube, just a few kilometres from Mohács along Road 56. It is exceptionally well served by bus lines; public transport company Volán connects the village to such cities as Szeged, Kecskemét, Szekszárd, and Budapest, among others. The Danube–Drava National Park runs through the public administration territory of the settlement. There is a pension in the village where guests may sample local wines and organic products.

Like many other settlements along the River Danube, Bár too was devastated and completely depopulated during the Ottoman Turk occupation of the country in the 16th century. Once the Turks had been ousted, thanks to its river port, Bár became one of the central hubs of the wider region’s repopulation by German settlers. While most settlers moved on over time, some made their home here. This is the period that the German name of the village, Baar, recalls.

The centre of the village is right next to the long distance bus station. At the bottom of the well-maintained, gently sloping park, there is a Holy Trinity statue, a memorial honouring the victims of World War II, and a statue erected in memory of those local ethnic Germans forcefully resettled after World War II. The Roman Catholic church standing on top of the hill was built in 1864 in Romanesque style. Now a protected architectural monument, the mansion of the Mattyasovszki family was built around 1800 just north of the village. The building reflects the wealth of a village trading in cereal crops during the Napoleonic Wars.
