Vojka nad Dunajom is a village in Rye Island, in southwestern Slovakia, in the district of Dunajská Streda. The village extends between the old riverbed of the Danube and its newly built artificial channel, about 21 km south from Bratislava. Access is along the new roads from Bratislava, towards the border of Hungary, from the direction of Gabčíkovo through the hydroelectric dam, or by passing the river by ferry from Kyselica. The village is easily accessible from Bratislava with suburban services. The nearest railway station is in Bratislava- Petržalka, 26 km away.
Finds from the Migration Period were discovered in the environs of the village. It was first referred to as Vayka in documents from 1186. It was the property of Bratislava Castle and Chapter. King Béla IV later donated it to the Archbishop of Esztergom. The name of the village is related to the name of the first King of Hungary Stephen I, whose name before he was Christianized was Vajk.
Vojka nad Dunajom was the centre of a special unit called the Liberty of Vojka subject to the Archbishopric of Esztergom. This liberty was a kind of state within the state. It had its proper court of justice, an administrator, mayor and notary independent from the County of Bratislava. The village enjoyed municipal privileges until the late half of the 19th century.
Kyselica was annexed to Vojka nad Dunajom in 1940 and again separated 1981 when the feeding channel of the Danube was constructed. The two separated villages of Vojka and Kyselica are now connected with ferry. Especially the fans of water sports, fishermen and lovers of cycling will find the natural setting ideal for their hobbies. By the dam of the canal and the reservoir leads an international Danube cycling track, which is one of the cycling arteries of Europe.
