Radvaň nad Dunajom

Radvaň nad Dunajom is a village in Slovakia in the district of Komárno. It lies on the Danube Plain, 18 km east of Komárno. Streets and houses of the village are located on the shores of Danube with a view on the hilly Hungarian side of the river. Under the control of the village fall settlements Žitava a Bystrička, which are 2 km far. The village is easily accessible from Komárno with suburban services. The nearest railway station is in Komárno, 18 km away.

The village of royal equerries and barrel-markers is known as an archeological site. While excavating near one of the best known Danube fords, which existed in the village of Žitava, the archaeologists also discovered an avar-Slavic burial place from 8th century. Radvaň nad Dunajom was first mentioned in 1260 as Rodoan. Matúš Čák occupied and burned down the village in 1303, the Turks came in the 16th century and did the same. The village and its environs were in the centre of Turkish wars in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Not far from the village and next to the place where the Stará Žitava flows into the Danube, the Emperor Rudolf II’s brother Matthias concluded a very disadvantageous peace with the Turks for 20 years. This event is known in history as the Peace of Žitava. It was signed under an enormous oak tree, which does not exist anymore.

Radvaň nad Dunajom was also a renowned centre of millers who had water mills on the Danube and guild of their own which existed until 1874. The milling disappeared as late as 1945.

The arms of the Danube and Žitava rivers offer excellent opportunities for water tourism. The Nature Reserve of Mašan is situated on elevated dunes, which are slightly higher situated than the surrounding agricultural landscape. This reserve contains one of the best-conserved localities of vegetation thriving on sand.

-      The Reformed church was built in the second half of the 17th century, reconstructed in 18th century and adapted in Neo-Classical taste in the first half of the 19th century.
