The municipality of Sremski Karlovci is located on the bank of the Danube River, on the slopes of the Fruška Gora. From Belgrade the capital of the Republic of Serbia are located 65 km (about 1 hour and 30 minutes of drive) and from Novi Sad, the capital of the Autonomous province of Vojvodina are located 11 km (approximately 15 minutes of drive)

The town was first mentioned in historical documents in 1308 with the name Karom. The fortress of Karom was built on the ruins of the ancient Roman one. In 16th century Karom will be conquered by Turks and until 1699th the Karom was a possession of the Hungarian noble families. Between 16 November 1698 and 26 January 1699, the town of Karlovci was the site of a congress that ended the hostilities between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy League, a coalition of various European powers including Habsburg Monarchy, Poland, Venice and Russia; the congress produced the Treaty of Karlowitz. It was the first time a round table was used in international politics. After this peace treaty, the town was part of the Habsburg Monarchy and was included into the Military Frontier.

The town was also the spiritual, political and cultural centre of the Serbs in the Habsburg Monarchy. The Metropolitan of the Serb Orthodox Church (1708th) resided in the town. To this day, the Serb Orthodox Patriarch retains the title of Metropolitan of Karlovci. The town also featured the earliest Serb (and Slavic in general) gymnasium (1791st). Three years after this, an Orthodox seminary was also founded in the town: it was the second oldest Orthodox seminary in the world (after the Spiritual Academy in Kiev), and it is still in existence. By the early twentieth century were built all major buildings and Sremski Karlovci obtained its current appearance

The basis of the economy of the municipality is the production of agricultural products, mainly in the field of viticulture and fruit growing. Considering the number of inhabitants, it is understandable that the municipality there is a significant and greater industry. However, it could be said that the present five types of activities: building material industry, agriculture, metal processing industry, tourism and hospitality and trade. The municipality of Sremski Karlovci got numerous projects through the development of tourism and stimulates tourists to quality and eventful stay in the city. Particular importance for tourism development has Tourism organization of Sremski Karlovci.

Sremski Karlovci is one of the few places in our country that has maintained most of the characteristics of past times. Thanks to events and architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the city core as a protected ambient is fully preserved and represents a fascination for many tourists.

Numerous cultural and historical monuments give more than a basis for the development of cultural, religious and educational tourism. Most important historical monuments in Sremski Karlovci are: Patriarchy Residence - the most impressive buildings of the nineteenth century in Vojvodina, which today is the seat of the Bishop of Srem; Karlovci’s Grammar School – the oldest Serbian high school, founded in 1791st; The Seminary – the boarding school for the pupils of The Theological School built in 1903rd; Fountain ’’The Four Lions’’ – built in 1799 in honour of finishing the first public system of water supply in Karlovci; as well as the City Hall, the Lower Church, the Upper Church, Museum of Branko Radičević, The Beekeeping Museum of the Zivanovic Family, Theological School, The Chapel of Peace.

In addition, must not be left out nor natural resources, especially protected natural areas with the total area in the municipality is 1484 ha. Stražilovo - picnic area on the territory of National Park "Fruska Gora" is 4.5 km away from the center of Sremski Karlovci. The poet Branko Radičević was buried here. Danube River with the hinterland (the complex of forests along the Danube River and the site Kalište) - in addition to construction of the marina for small boats and passenger revival of river traffic and the construction of sports facilities on the Danube, is of great importance and the fact that the cycle tourism is in the extraordinary rise and that during the great European project of creating bicycle paths along the Danube. Besides great importance have parks of nature “Dvorska basta” (Palatine garden) and Koviljsko- petrovaradinski rit and several natural monuments

Of the numerous events should be highlighted “Karlovačka berba grožđa”, which is traditionally held every year on the last weekend of September or first weekend of October. In Srmski Karlovci is good offer of private accommodation and catering facilities. In addition to the only hotel in Sremski Karlovci, they offer bungalows on Stražilovo and private housing. Several restaurants in the city give tourists the opportunity to taste food and international cuisine.
